Most people when getting a Budgie at the pet store can’t tell whether their feather friend is a young or mature bird. There are several ways to tell if your Budgie is a young or mature bird through these characteristics below:
Cere Color (nostril color)
For Young Males their cere color in their nostrils should be a smooth pink or blue-purplish color.
For Young Females their cere color in their nostrils should be a very pale pink or white-blue color (often very light).
For Mature Males their cere color in their nostrils should be a deep blue color.
For Mature Females their cere color in their nostrils should be a pale brown or crusty brown color.
Eye Appearance
Young: Their eyes should be a solid black with no visible iris.
Mature: Their eyes should have a white iris with a black pupil.
Head Stripes
Young: Their forehead stripes should cover their head until the cere.
Mature: Their forehead does not have any stripes due to their first molt around 4 months old.
