Most people when they see Chihuahuas they typically see the Short Hair Chihuahua which is the most popular however did you know that there are Long Hair Chihuahuas as well? They both come from the same Chihuahua family however, their differences lie in their distinctive coats, grooming care, and temperature needs. Here are the Pros and Cons of Long Hair vs Short Hair Chihuahuas:
Long Hair Chihuahua
Long Hair Chihuahuas have a long, silky, and fuller coat with fluffier ears and tails. They require grooming care by brushing their coat at least four times a week to avoid getting very matted. During extreme temperatures, due to their longer coat, they have more protection which they are kept warm more often in the winter time.
Pros: A unique longer and fuller coat that gives them more protection.
Cons: More grooming care is needed a couple of times a week to avoid matted hair.

Short Hair Chihuahua
Short Hair Chihuahuas have a sleeker and shinier coat. They require less grooming care by brushing their coat at least once a week with a grooming brush. Due to their short coat, they are more prone to shed which is why grooming care is necessary. During extreme temperatures, they are more prone to get cold easily and shiver in the winter time. This makes a warm cozy sweater suited for them.
Pros: a sleeker and shinier coat that requires less grooming care.
Cons: More prone to shedding and shivering during cold temperatures.

Having a Long Hair or Short Hair Chihuahua can come with its unique characteristics in appearance and grooming needs. They both make loving dogs from the same Chihuahua family when they have the right owner who can provide for their care.
